Understanding the hierarchical structure and physicochemical properties of starch isolated from fermented dough with different times (0-120 min) is valuable for improving the quality of fermented dough-based products. The results indicate that fermentation disrupted the starch granule surface and decreased the average particle size from 19.72 µm to 18.45 µm. Short-term fermentation (< 60 min) disrupted the crystalline, lamellar, short-range ordered molecular and helical structures of starch, while long-term fermentation (60-120 min) elevated the ordered degree of these structures. For example, relative crystallinity and double helix contents increased from 23.7 % to 26.8 % and 34.4 % to 37.2 %, respectively. During short-term fermentation, the structural amorphization facilitated interactions between starch molecular chains and water molecules, which increased the peak viscosity from 275.4 to 320.6 mPa·s and the swelling power from 7.99 to 8.52 g/g. In contrast, starches extracted from long-term fermented dough displayed the opposite results. Interestingly, the hardness and springiness of starch gels gradually decreased as fermentation time increased. These findings extend our understanding of the starch structure-property relationship during varied fermentation stages, potentially benefiting the production of better-fermented foods.

BACKGROUND: The dynamic and hierarchical nature of the functional brain network. The neural dynamical systems tend to converge to multiple attractors (stable fixed points or dynamical states) in long run. Little is known about how the changes in this brain dynamic "long-term" behavior of the connectivity flow of brain network in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). METHODS: This study recruited 92 patients with GAD and 77 healthy controls (HC). We applied a reachable probability approach combining a Non-homogeneous Markov model with transition probability to quantify all possible connectivity flows and the hierarchical structure of brain functional systems at the dynamic level and the stationary probability vector (10-step transition probabilities) to describe the steady state of the system in the long run. A random forest algorithm was conducted to predict the severity of anxiety. RESULTS: The dynamic functional patterns in distributed brain networks had larger possibility to converge in bilateral thalamus, posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), right superior occipital gyrus (SOG) and smaller possibility to converge in bilateral superior temporal gyrus (STG) and right parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) in patients with GAD compared to HC. The abnormal transition probability pattern could predict anxiety severity in patients with GAD. LIMITATIONS: Small samples and subjects taking medications may have influenced our results. Future studies are expected to rule out the potential confounding effects. CONCLUSION: Our results have revealed abnormal dynamic neural communication and integration in emotion regulation in patients with GAD, which give new insights to understand the dynamics of brain function of patients with GAD.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is an inherited movement disorder characterized by a progressive decline in motor coordination. Despite the extensive functional connectivity (FC) alterations reported in previous SCA3 studies in the cerebellum and cerebellar-cerebral pathways, the influence of these FC disturbances on the hierarchical organization of cerebellar functional regions remains unclear. Here, we compared 35 SCA3 patients with 48 age- and sex-matched healthy controls using a combination of voxel-based morphometry and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate whether cerebellar hierarchical organization is altered in SCA3. Utilizing connectome gradients, we identified the gradient axis of cerebellar hierarchical organization, spanning sensorimotor to transmodal (task-unfocused) regions. Compared to healthy controls, SCA3 patients showed a compressed hierarchical organization in the cerebellum at both voxel-level (p < .05, TFCE corrected) and network-level (p < .05, FDR corrected). This pattern was observed in both intra-cerebellar and cerebellar-cerebral gradients. We observed that decreased intra-cerebellar gradient scores in bilateral Crus I/II both negatively correlated with SARA scores (left/right Crus I/II: r = -.48/-.50, p = .04/.04, FDR corrected), while increased cerebellar-cerebral gradients scores in the vermis showed a positive correlation with disease duration (r = .48, p = .04, FDR corrected). Control analyses of cerebellar gray matter atrophy revealed that gradient alterations were associated with cerebellar volume loss. Further FC analysis showed increased functional connectivity in both unimodal and transmodal areas, potentially supporting the disrupted cerebellar functional hierarchy uncovered by the gradients. Our findings provide novel evidence regarding alterations in the cerebellar functional hierarchy in SCA3.

Background: Continuous light exposure increases sympathetic excitation in rats, leading to hypertension, left ventricular hypertrophy, and fibrosis. This study was aimed to investigate whether continuous light exposure causes destabilization of vital signs and gut microbiota (GM) in Sprague Dawley (SD) rats and whether clonidine hydrochloride (CH), a central sympathetic depressant drug, could prevent these changes. Methods: Eight-week-old male SD rats were divided into three groups with different interventions for 14 weeks: control group (CG), 2-mL pure water gavaged daily while on a normal 12-h light/dark cycle; continuous illumination group (CI), 2-mL pure water gavaged daily while receiving continuous exposure to light (300 lx); and drug administration group (DA), CH (10 µg/kg) gavaged daily while receiving continuous exposure to light (300 lx). Results: The results showed that blood pressure, heart rate, and body weight were significantly higher in the CI group than in the CG and DA groups (P < 0.05). Moreover, the Shannon index was higher in the DA group than in the CI group (P = 0.012). The beta diversity index in the CG group was significantly higher in the CI group (P = 0.039). The pairwise comparison results of the linear discriminant analysis effect size showed that Oscillospirales were enriched in the DA group, whereas the Prevotellaceae lineage (family level) > Prevotella (genus level) > Prevotellaceae_bacterium (species level) were enriched in the CI group. The Muribaculaceae family was more abundant in the CG group than in the CI group. Conclusion: Sympathetic nerve inhibition restored the abnormal vital signs and GM changes under continuous light exposure.

BACKGROUND: A percutaneous ventricular assist device (pVAD) is an effective method to treat heart failure, but its complications, mainly hemolysis and thrombus formation, cannot be ignored. Accurate evaluation of hemolysis and thrombus formation in pVAD is essential to guide the development of pVAD and reduce the incidence of complications. METHODS: This study optimized the numerical model to predict hemolysis and thrombus formation in pVAD. The hemolysis model is based on the power law function, and the multi-component thrombus prediction model is improved by introducing the von Willebrand factor. RESULTS: The error between the numerical simulation and the hydraulic performance experiment is within 5%. The numerical results of hemolysis are in good agreement with those of in vitro experiments. Meanwhile, the thrombus location predicted by the numerical model is the same as that found in the in vivo experiment. CONCLUSION: The numerical model suggested in this study may therefore accurately assess the possible hemolytic and thrombotic dangers in pVAD, making it an effective tool to support the development of pVAD.

Introduction: The availability of a human-like chronic heart failure (HF) animal model was critical for affiliating development of novel therapeutic drug treatments. With the close physiology relatedness to humans, the non-human primate (NHP) HF model would be valuable to better understand the pathophysiology and pharmacology of HF. The purpose of this work was to present preliminary cardiac image findings using echocardiography and cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) in a HF-like cynomolgus macaque model. Methods: The NHP diet-induced model developed cardiac phenotypes that exhibited diastolic dysfunction with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) or preserved LVEF. Twenty cynomolgus monkeys with cardiac dysfunction were selected by echocardiography and subsequently separated into two groups, LVEF < 65% (termed as HFrEF, n = 10) and LVEF ≥ 65% with diastolic dysfunction (termed as HFpEF, n = 10). Another group of ten healthy monkeys was used as the healthy control. All monkeys underwent a CMR study to measure global longitudinal strain (GLS), myocardial extracellular volume (ECV), and late gadolinium enhancement (LGE). In healthy controls and HFpEF group, quantitative perfusion imaging scans at rest and under dobutamine stress were performed and myocardial perfusion reserve (MPR) was subsequently obtained. Results: No LGE was observed in any monkey. Monkeys with HF-like features were significantly older, compared to the healthy control group. There were significant differences among the three groups in ECV (20.79 ± 3.65% in healthy controls; 27.06 ± 3.37% in HFpEF group, and 31.11 ± 4.50% in HFrEFgroup, p < 0.001), as well as for stress perfusion (2.40 ± 0.34 ml/min/g in healthy controls vs. 1.28 ± 0.24 ml/min/g in HFpEF group, p < 0.01) and corresponding MPR (1.83 ± 0.3 vs. 1.35 ± 0.29, p < 0.01). After adjusting for age, ECV (p = 0.01) and MPR (p = 0.048) still showed significant differences among the three groups. Conclusion: Our preliminary imaging findings demonstrated cardiac dysfunction, elevated ECV, and/or reduced MPR in this HF-like NHP model. This pilot study laid the foundation for further mechanistic research and the development of a drug testing platform for distinct HF pathophysiology.

Although previous studies have suggested that meteorological factors are associated with Bell's palsy, articles on this topic are rare and the results are inconsistent. We aim to reveal the relationship between exposure to different meteorological factors and the onset of severe Bell's palsy (SBP) with daily data. A case-crossover study based on time-series data was applied, and the minimum risk value of each climatic factor was set as the reference value. We fitted a distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) which applied quasi-Poisson regression to evaluate the exposure-response association and the lag-response association of meteorological factors on the occurrence of SBP. The mode value and per-decile interval value of each meteorological factor were all included in the analysis. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to test the robustness of results. A total of 863 SBP patients (474 males and 389 females) from 7 hospitals in the Shenzhen Futian District were selected from January 2009 to February 2020. The highest relations effect was tested in the cumulative exposure-response result shown as follows; mean temperature at the minimum value 15.3°C with RR of 10.370 (1.557-69.077) over lag 0 to 13; relative humidity at the 30th value 71% with RR of 8.041 (1.016-63.616) over lag 0 to 14; wind speed at the 90th value 31 (0.1 m/s) with RR of 1.286 (1.038-1.593) over lag 0; mean air pressure at the 30th value 1001.4 (pa) with RR of 9.052 (1.039-78.858) over lag 0 to 5; visibility at the 80th value 26.5 (km) with RR of 1.961 (1.005-1.423) over lag 0 to 2; average total cloud cover at the max value 100 (%) with RR 1.787 (1.014-3.148) over lag 0 to 2; sunshine duration at the 10th value 0.1 (h) with RR of 4.772 (1.018-22.361); daily evaporation shows no relationship in the cumulative result; daily average solar radiation at the minimum value 0 (W/m2) with RR of 5.588 (1.184-26.382). There is a relationship between wind speed and the onset of SBP, while mean air pressure, visibility, and average total cloud cover, especially sunshine duration and solar radiation which showed a strong effect, may be associated with severe clinical symptoms of SBP. Mean temperature and relative humidity may affect the course of SBP.

Blood flow and pressure calculated using the currently available methods have shown the potential to predict the progression of pathology, guide treatment strategies and help with postoperative recovery. However, the conspicuous disadvantage of these methods might be the time-consuming nature due to the simulation of virtual interventional treatment. The purpose of this study is to propose a fast novel physics-based model, called FAST, for the prediction of blood flow and pressure. More specifically, blood flow in a vessel is discretized into a number of micro-flow elements along the centerline of the artery, so that when using the equation of viscous fluid motion, the complex blood flow in the artery is simplified into a one-dimensional (1D) steady-state flow. We demonstrate that this method can compute the fractional flow reserve (FFR) derived from coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). 345 patients with 402 lesions are used to evaluate the feasibility of the FAST simulation through a comparison with three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Invasive FFR is also introduced to validate the diagnostic performance of the FAST method as a reference standard. The performance of the FAST method is comparable with the 3D CFD method. Compared with invasive FFR, the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of FAST is 88.6%, 83.2% and 91.3%, respectively. The AUC of FFRFAST is 0.906. This demonstrates that the FAST algorithm and 3D CFD method show high consistency in predicting steady-state blood flow and pressure. Meanwhile, the FAST method also shows the potential in detecting lesion-specific ischemia.

Water diffusivity, a critical parameter for cereal processing design and quality optimization, is usually concentration-dependent. dynamic vapor sorption (DVS) system provides an approach to establishing the relationship between water concentration and diffusivity. However, the usual relative humidity (RH) jump during practical sorption processes is usually greater than that adopted in DVS measurements. Water vapor sorption kinetics of glutinous rice grains, glutinous rice flour and wheat flour dough films were measured using the DVS system to verify if varying RH step sizes can obtain identical diffusivities within the same range. The effective diffusivities were determined according to Fick's second law. The results revealed that increasing RH step size led to a higher estimated diffusivity, regardless of whether the water concentration gradient or potential chemical gradient was considered a driving force for water diffusion. This finding was further confirmed by a linear RH scanning DVS measurement. The water concentration-dependent diffusivity obtained from a multi-step DVS measurement, according to Fick's second law, will overestimate the required time for practical cereal drying or adsorption. Thus, this paradoxical discrepancy needs a new mass transfer mechanism to be explained.

Introduction: Musculoskeletal system gradually degenerates with aging, and a hypoxia environment at a high altitude may accelerate this process. However, the comprehensive effects of high-altitude environments on bones and muscles remain unclear. This study aims to compare the differences in bones and muscles at different altitudes, and to explore the mechanism and influencing factors of the high-altitude environment on the skeletal muscle system. Methods: This is a prospective, multicenter, cohort study, which will recruit a total of 4000 participants over 50 years from 12 research centers with different altitudes (50m~3500m). The study will consist of a baseline assessment and a 5-year follow-up. Participants will undergo assessments of demographic information, anthropomorphic measures, self-reported questionnaires, handgrip muscle strength assessment (HGS), short physical performance battery (SPPB), blood sample analysis, and imaging assessments (QCT and/or DXA, US) within a time frame of 3 days after inclusion. A 5-year follow-up will be conducted to evaluate the changes in muscle size, density, and fat infiltration in different muscles; the muscle function impairment; the decrease in BMD; and the osteoporotic fracture incidence. Statistical analyses will be used to compare the research results between different altitudes. Multiple linear, logistic regression and classification tree analyses will be conducted to calculate the effects of various factors (e.g., altitude, age, and physical activity) on the skeletal muscle system in a high-altitude environment. Finally, a provisional cut-off point for the diagnosis of sarcopenia in adults at different altitudes will be calculated. Ethics and dissemination: The study has been approved by the institutional research ethics committee of each study center (main center number: KHLL2021-KY056). Results will be disseminated through scientific conferences and peer-reviewed publications, as well as meetings with stakeholders. To investigate the role of serum spalt like transcription factor 4 (SALL4) in the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with nonsurgical treatment. Serum samples were collected from 101 patients with HCC without surgical treatment, then the SALL4 was detected by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. According to subsequent treatment, patients were divided into 2 groups, best supportive care (BSC) (58 cases) and nonsurgical anticancer treatment (NSAT) (48 cases). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox multivariate regression analysis were applied to evaluate the relationship between SALL4 and survival time of 2 groups. In BSC group, there was no significant difference of the survival time between 2 groups (SALL4 < 800 ng/mL or SALL4 ≥ 800 ng/mL) (P = .339). In NSAT group, the survival time of patients with low SALL4 concentration was significantly longer than patients with high SALL4 concentration (P = .005). SALL4 have no predictive effect in BSC patients with HCC. But for patients received NSAT, low SALL4 concentration in serum may indicate longer survival.

The purpose of this study is to solve the effective way of domain-specific knowledge graph construction from information to knowledge. We propose the deep learning algorithm to extract entities and relationship from open-source intelligence by the RoBERTa-wwm-ext pretraining model and a knowledge fusion framework based on the longest common attribute entity alignment technology and bring in different text similarity algorithms and classification algorithms for verification. The experimental research showed that the named entity recognition model using the RoBERTa-wwm-ext pretrained model achieves the best results in terms of recall rate and F1 value, first, and the F value of RoBERTa-wwm-ext + BiLSTM + CRF reached up to 83.07%. Second, the RoBERTa-wwm-ext relationship extraction model has achieved the best results; compared with the relation extraction model based on recurrent neural network, it is improved by about 20%∼30%. Finally, the entity alignment algorithm based on the attribute similarity of the longest common subsequence has achieved the best results on the whole. The findings of this study provide an effective way to complete knowledge graph construction in domain-specific texts. The research serves as a first step for future research, for example, domain-specific intelligent Q&A.

Background: This study aims to correlate the morphological complexity of left atrial appendage (LAA) with thrombosis and stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Methods: The training cohort consisted of 46 patients with AF (age 55.8 ± 7.2 years, 73.9% men) who were referred for radiofrequency catheter ablation. An independent validation cohort consisting of 443 patients with AF was enrolled for further verification. All patients in the training cohort underwent both transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and enhanced computed tomography (CT). Fractal dimension (FD) analysis was performed to evaluate the morphological complexity of LAAs quantitatively. Clinical and imaging manifestations, FD of LAAs, and diagnostic accuracy were investigated and compared between patients with AF in both training and validation cohorts. Results: In the training cohort, LAAs (n = 22) with thrombi had significantly higher FD than those without thrombi (n = 24) h 0.44 ± 0.07 vs. 2.35 ± 0.11, p = 0.003). Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis suggested that the diagnostic accuracy of FD combined with a CHA2DS2-VaSc score was significantly higher than that of the CHA2DS2-VaSc score alone in low- to moderate-risk patients with AF (area under the curve 0.8479 vs. 0.6958, p = 0.009). The results were also validated in an independent external validation cohort and demonstrated that increased FD was associated with stroke. Hemodynamic analysis revealed that LAAs with thrombi and high FD were prone to blood stasis and lower blood flow rate. Conclusion: LAA morphological complexity is closely associated with thrombosis and stroke in patients with paroxysmal AF. A new risk assessment system combining CHA2DS2-VaSc score and FD has a higher diagnostic accuracy in predicting LAA thrombosis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with a first hip fracture are at high risk of fracturing their other hip. Despite this, preventive therapy is often not given. Because little is known about specific risk factors of a second hip fracture, we investigated the association with areal bone mineral density (aBMD), muscle size, and density. We also investigated whether muscle parameters predict the risk of a contralateral fracture independently of aBMD. METHODS: Three groups were included, one without hip fracture (a subcohort of the China Action on Spine and Hip Status study), one with a first, and one with a second hip fracture. Subjects with fractures were recruited from the longitudinal Chinese Second Hip Fracture Evaluation (CSHFE). Computed tomography scans of CSHFE patients, which were obtained immediately following their first fracture, were used to measure cross-sectional area and density of the gluteus maximus (G.MaxM) and gluteus medius and minimus (G.Med/MinM) muscles. Computed tomography X-ray absorptiometry was used to measure aBMD of the contralateral femur. Median follow-up time to second fracture was 4.5 years. Cox proportional hazards models were used to compute hazard ratios (HR) of second hip fracture risk in subjects with a first hip fracture. Multivariate logistic regressions were used to compare odds ratios (OR) for the risk of a first and second hip fracture. RESULTS: Three hundred and one participants (68.4 ± 6.1 years, 64% female) without and 302 participants (74.6 ± 9.9 years, 71% female) with a first hip fracture were included in the analysis. Among the latter, 45 (79.2 ± 7.1 years) sustained a second hip fracture. ORs for first hip fracture were significant for aBMD and muscle size and density. ORs for a second fracture were smaller by a factor of 3 to 4 and no longer significant for femoral neck (FN) aBMD. HRs for predicting second hip fracture confirmed the results. G.Med/MinM density (HR, 1.68; CI, 1.20-2.35) and intertrochanter aBMD (HR, 1.62; CI, 1.13-2.31) were the most significant. FN aBMD was not significant. G.Med/MinM density remained significant for predicting second hip fracture after adjustment for FN (HR, 1.66; Cl, 1.18-2.30) or total hip aBMD (HR, 1.50; 95% Cl, 1.04-2.15). CONCLUSIONS: Density of the G.Med/MinM muscle is an aBMD independent predictor of the risk of second hip fracture. Intertrochanteric aBMD is a better predictor of second hip fracture than FN and total hip aBMD. These results may trigger a paradigm shift in the assessment of second hip fracture risk and prevention strategies.

In order to provide a theoretical basis on how germination treatment modulated the pasting behaviors of starches from native and germinated waxy brown rice, impacts of germination on the molecular and supramolecular structures and pasting behaviors were evaluated. Multiple analytical methods such as thermodynamics and spectroscopy were applied in this work for investigating the changes in starch multiscale structure and pasting behaviors. The results show that germination treatment contributed to an obvious increase in α- and ß-amylase activities, which could degrade the starch chains and reduce the contents of double helices (50.9%-43.2%), short-range ordered degree (1.054-0.908), relative crystallinity (40.1%-30.5%), and lamellar ordering degree (dc, 6.09-5.46 nm) along with apparent erosion on starch granules. These structural amorphizations at the molecular and supramolecular levels could lead to the weakened entanglements and interactions among molecular chains, eventually reducing the characteristic viscosity (e.g., overall, peak, and final viscosity) of starch. This study may facilitate better development of germinated rice-based products.

Understanding how starch constituent in frozen dough affected bread quality would be valuable for contributing to the frozen products with better quality. To elucidate the underlying mechanism, starch was fractionated from multiple freezing-thawing (F/T) treated dough and reconstituted with gluten. Results showed that F/T treatment destructed the molecular and supramolecular structures of starch, which were more severe as the F/T cycle increasing. These structural disorganizations made water molecules easier to permeate into the interior of starch granules and form hydrogen bonds with starch molecular chains, which elevated the peak, breakdown, setback and final viscosity of starch paste. In addition, F/T treatment resulted in decreased specific volume (from 1.54 to 0.90 × 103 m3/Kg) and increased hardness (from 42.98 to 52.31 N) for steamed bread. We propose the strengthened water absorption ability and accelerated intra- and inter-molecular rearrangement of starch molecules and weak stability of "starch-gluten matrices" would allow interpreting deteriorated bread quality.

The prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) in Tibetan Highlanders is lower than that in plain-living individuals, but the mechanism still unclear. Gut microbiota (GM) disorder is considered one of the potential factors involved in the pathogenesis of CAD, but the GM characteristics of Tibetan Highlanders suffering from CAD are unknown. We sequenced the V3-V4 region of the 16S ribosomal RNA of gut bacteria from fecal samples from Tibetan and Han CAD patients and healthy individuals inhabiting the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, as well as from Han CAD patients and healthy individuals living at sea level, and we analyzed the GM characteristics of these subjects by bioinformatics analysis. The results showed that Tibetan Highlanders suffering from CAD had higher GM α-diversity, with differently distributed cluster compared with healthy Tibetan Highlanders and Han CAD patients living at high and low altitudes. Genera Catenibacterium, Clostridium_sensu_stricto, Holdemanella, and Ruminococcus 2 were enriched in Tibetan Highlanders suffering from CAD compared with healthy Tibetan Highlanders and Han CAD patients living at high- and low-altitudes. Prevotella was enriched in Tibetan Highlanders suffering from CAD compared with Han CAD patients living at high- and low-altitudes. Moreover, Catenibacterium was positively correlated with Prevotella. Additionally, Catenibacterium, Holdemanella, and Prevotella were positively correlated with fermented dairy product, carbohydrate and fiber intake by the subjects, while Clostridium_sensu_stricto was negatively correlated with protein intake by the subjects. In conclusion, our study indicated that Tibetan Highlanders suffering from CAD showed distinct GM, which was linked to their unique dietary characteristics and might associated with CAD.

Divergence-free smoothing with wall treatment (DFSwt) method is proposed for processing with four-dimensional (4D) flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data of blood flows to enhance the quality of flow field with physical constraints. The new method satisfies the no-slip wall boundary condition and applies wall function of velocity profile for better estimating the velocity gradient in the near-wall region, and consequently improved wall shear stress (WSS) calculation against the issue of coarse resolution of 4D flow MRI. In the first testing case, blood flow field obtained from 4D flow MRI is well smoothed by DFSwt method. A great consistency is observed between the post-processed 4D flow MRI data and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) data in the interested velocity field. WSS has an apparent improvement due to the proposed near-wall treatment with special wall function comparing to the result from original 4D flow MRI data or the DFS-processed data with no wall function. The other five cases also show the same performance that smoothed velocity field and improved WSS estimation are achieved on 4D flow MRI data optimized by DFSwt. The improvements will benefit the study of hemodynamics regarding the determination of location or the potential possibility of lesions.

The measurement of steroid hormones provided critical information in the clinical evaluation of endocrine disorders. In this study, we developed a high-throughput solid-phase extraction method for the analysis of 26 steroids in human serum and plasma samples by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Chromatographic conditions and sample preparation were optimized to achieve good separation and maximum sensitivity for these analytes. Under the optimum conditions, good linearities were achieved in the quantitative range for each steroid hormone with the correlation coefficients (r) larger than 0.99. The limits of quantitation of the method were in the range from 0.0005 to 0.7901 ng/mL. The recoveries were in the range of 87.2-114.2% with intra- and interday precision lower than 9.94%. This method has already been applied to series of samples from clinical trials, and there was no significant difference between serum and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid plasma samples.
